Outdoor Air Quality

What is EAQI?

The European Air Quality Index (EAQI) is a comprehensive tool designed to provide individuals and authorities with detailed insights into air quality conditions.

By aggregating data from air quality monitoring stations, the EAQI offers real-time information on pollutant concentrations, including particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and sulphur dioxide (SO2). This index serves as a valuable resource for users to understand the short-term air quality situation in their respective regions, cities, or countries.

Through intuitive visualizations and health-related messages, individuals can make informed decisions about outdoor activities, while authorities can implement appropriate measures to address the implications of poor air quality on public health and the environment.

Developed collaboratively by the European Commission’s Directorate General for Environment and the European Environment Agency, the EAQI plays a crucial role in informing citizens and policymakers about the recent air quality status, ultimately contributing to efforts aimed at improving air quality and safeguarding public health.
