How to Monitor Indoor Air Quality

Monitoring indoor air quality is essential for understanding environmental conditions and identifying potential health risks. Since many air pollutants are invisible and odourless, their presence often cannot be detected without proper measurement. 

Indoor air quality is typically monitored using sensors that measure key parameters such as particulate matter (PM), carbon dioxide (CO₂), temperature, and relative humidity. Some systems may also track additional pollutants such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or other environmental factors. 

Continuous monitoring provides real-time insights into changes in air quality, allowing users to respond promptly to rising pollutant levels. For example, increased CO₂ concentrations may indicate insufficient ventilation, while elevated particulate matter levels can be linked to activities such as cooking or cleaning. 

Monitoring also helps identify patterns over time. By analysing trends, it becomes easier to understand how daily activities, occupancy, and external conditions affect indoor air quality. This information supports more informed decisions about ventilation, filtration, and overall indoor environment management. 

To effectively monitor indoor air quality, it is important to place sensors in representative locations within a space, away from direct pollutant sources, windows, or ventilation outlets, to ensure accurate readings. In larger or more complex environments, multiple sensors may be needed to capture variations across different areas. 

Modern indoor air quality monitors often combine data from multiple parameters and present it in a simplified format, making it easier to interpret overall conditions. When paired with outdoor air quality data, monitoring systems can also help optimise ventilation strategies by balancing fresh air intake with external pollution levels. 

By continuously tracking indoor air quality, it is possible to maintain healthier, more comfortable indoor environments and take timely action when conditions change.
