Athens, Greece | City-wide Air Quality Monitoring Network for a Clearer Picture of Urban AQ

A network of 100 Sensees Outdoor Air Quality Monitoring Stations has been deployed across Athens as part of the City of Athens Smart Neighbourhood initiative.

Distributed across the city, the stations provide location-specific air quality and environmental measurements, creating a dense layer of data that helps build a more detailed picture of environmental conditions across different neighbourhoods.

THE CHALLENGE: Air quality does not stop at city level.

In a large and diverse urban environment such as Athens, air quality conditions can vary from one location to another.

Traffic, urban density, green areas and other local characteristics can contribute to spatial differences that are difficult to capture with a limited number of measurement points.

Building a more detailed understanding of the urban environment therefore requires something more: a dense network capable of providing local measurements across different parts of the city.

THE SOLUTION: 100 Sensees Outdoor stations across Athens.

As part of the City of Athens Smart Neighbourhood Digital Services initiative, 100 Sensees Outdoor Air Quality Monitoring Stations by Smart Sense have been deployed across the city, with the installation carried out by our partner Coverage.

Compact and designed for continuous outdoor operation, the stations form a distributed environmental monitoring network covering individual locations, neighbourhoods and municipal districts.

Each station measures key air pollutants and environmental parameters:

PM1 | PM2.5 | PM10 | CO | NO₂ | O₃ | SO₂ | Temperature | Humidity

Calculated Air Quality Index (AQI) is also included in the datasets published through the City of Athens Open Data platform.

THE NETWORK: From individual measurements to a city-wide picture.

One station provides insight into one location. One hundred stations create a network.

By collecting environmental measurements across multiple locations, the Athens deployment provides a more granular layer of information about conditions throughout the urban environment.

Measurements from individual neighbourhoods can be observed over time and compared across locations, helping reveal:

  • spatial differences in air quality across the city
  • changes in pollutant concentrations over time
  • local environmental patterns
  • differences between individual locations and neighbourhoods

The result is a monitoring approach that adds spatial detail to the understanding of air quality across Athens.

THE DATA: From sensing to understanding.

The value of the network extends beyond the physical monitoring stations.

Air quality and environmental measurements generated by the Smart Sense stations are published through the City of Athens Open Data platform, where individual stations are identified by location, neighbourhood and municipal district.

The platform is updated hourly with air quality and environmental data, creating a structured and publicly accessible environmental dataset.

This connects the physical monitoring infrastructure with the city’s wider digital ecosystem, turning measurements collected across Athens into environmental information that can be accessed and explored.

THE RESULT: A connected view of urban air quality.

With 100 Sensees Outdoor stations deployed across Athens, individual measurements become part of a connected city-wide monitoring network.By combining local measurements from multiple neighbourhoods, the network adds spatial detail to urban air quality monitoring — providing a clearer picture of how conditions vary across the city.
